Training
Pine Tree Council encourages all registered adults to be trained within 6 months of registration. Having trained leaders is in the best interest of the youth involved in Scouting. Every Scout deserves a trained leader! All Adult leaders will take basic training, with separate sessions for Cubmasters, Den Leaders, Scoutmasters, and Committee members. Specialized training is required to hold Family Camping trips with your unit, and for Webelos Leaders.
Adults may attend any additional training sessions, (i.e. you do not have to be a Boy Scout Leader to attend Boy Scout Leader Training) although some courses have pre-requisites. York District has many training opportunities available, but you may take your training in another district.

Basic leader training is designed to give position-related information to all adult leaders in Scouting. Building on the foundation established in the Fast Start Training, Basic Leader Training goes into greater detail. Every Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader is required to complete Basic Leader Training; it prepares him or her to deliver a quality, fun-filled program. Leaders who understand the whys and hows of the program are more effective in their roles. They know how to use available resources to provide an exciting and worthwhile program for the boys. Trained leaders have confidence in carrying out their responsibilities and, along with the boys, have more fun.
WEBELOS Outdoor Leader Training - WLOT
Designed specifically for Webelos den leaders and their assistants, Webelos Leader Outdoor Training teaches outdoor skills through demonstration and hands-on practice. It also prepares the leader to conduct Webelos overnight camping with the boys and parents of the den. In addition to covering basic camping skills, this training features planning campouts and finding resources.
University of Scouting
The University of Scouting is an annual gathering of the Cub Scout and Boy Scout leaders from the entire council. The University of Scouting is a training conference that takes place in a festive atmosphere. All Scout leaders should be encouraged to attend the annual University of Scouting. Some selected sessions from the 2007 University of Scouting can be found here.
The Roundtable is a great
source for all kinds of information ranging from District and Council activities
information, mini training sessions, problem solving, networking and a
lot of FUN! There will be guest speakers, Ethics in Action,
and discussions about the administrative side of Scouting. Group
Participation is desired - please bring your enthusiasm!
Make sure that your
unit has at least one person attend these monthly meetings so you know
what is happening outside your unit in the world of Scouting. Your
program will benefit from this up to date information.
The District Roundtables are the First Thursday of every month at 7:00pm at the Sanford High School, just off Rt. 109, North of the center of town. The format should help develop a stronger relationship between Packs and Troops. The meeting will start with general announcements and guest speakers, who will address the group as a whole. Next, the Cub and Scout Leaders will separate and have their individual programs. The OA will also have a separate meeting room.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is a one-day training event that introduces parents and leaders to the skills needed to plan and conduct pack outdoor activities, particularly pack camping.
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (ITOLS)
You have completed Boy Scout Basic Leader Training. Still don't feel like Daniel Boone in the outdoors? Then this is for you! ITOLS is an adult course which offers basic Scout skills through First Class. You have the opportunity for hands-on training in knots, map and compass, orienteering, cooking, first aid, campfire planning, campsite fun, and more! You can even earn your Tot 'n' Chip. Have fun while you live and learn the patrol method. This training is required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters to wear the Trained badge under their Badge of Office on their uniforms.
Wood Badge is advanced training in leadership skills for all adults in BSA programs. Cub Scouters, leaders in Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, Venturing, and commissioner services are invited to participate in Wood Badge. This advanced training is presented in two parts:
-
An advanced learning experience presented over two long (three-day) weekends or as a weeklong course.
-
An application phase of several months during which the leaders apply the specific skills they have learned at Wood Badge into their Scouting responsibilities.
Wood Badge in Pine Tree Council has a rich history of stories, songs, and laughter. Hundreds of Scouters have experienced the spirit of Wood Badge. Attendance is by invitation. Basic Leader Training is a pre-requisite. If you wish to be considered for Wood Badge, please contact Lance Eschholz, Course Scoutmaster.
Den Chief Training is a one-day or weekend Den Chief Training course, which is basic training for both Cub Scouts and Webelos Scout den chiefs. All den chiefs should attend, along with the Cubmaster and all den leaders.
Den Chief Training is full of fun, excitement, and information to help den chiefs do a good job.
Recognition is for Leaders,
too. Awards are available for almost every position; Cub and Webelos
Den Leaders, Cubmasters, Tiger Den Leaders, Scoutmasters, and Troop
and Pack Committee Chairs and Members. Earning awards is easy: Be
trained, be active, help support a quality program!
To apply for an award:
